jfs3I first saw this powerhouse Gospel group at the very first ACL festival in 2002 in sweltering heat…they played in the Blues and Gospel tent which became my home in the next three days. JFS consists of 5 singing sisters, a 7 piece funk/soul band, and the daddy rabbit…Bishop jfsFred…the father. This group from a little town outside of Bay City was such a joy to watch that I have followed them ever since. They played SXSW as well as gigs at Threadgill’s and Stubb’s. The show last night was sparsely attended compared to most Unplugged shows, but they rocked the house in a way that few band’s can! Two of the band members are sons and the rest are cousins or close friends. The bass player son looks like a NFL pulling guard….he wore a 4x white t-shirt that was so big that if you put enough starch in it, a small Vietnamese family could live in it ! The other son was jg1the lead Guitar player and sang in a sweet high voice. They even has a minor Passion play as part of their act with Bishop Fred as Jesus being nailed to a cross made out of PVC tubing…somehow it worked. I realize that I shortened my lifespan by two weeks by eating a greasy double cheeseburger on Wednesday…the loving spirit I felt watching this show added those two weeks back on. Go see these guys when they come back to town! Another night of live music in Austin. Ken Miller
