“For The Love of The City”
The future of New Orleans is in question. The natural events of Hurricane Katrina effected many residences within a city that is a cultural staple for music, food, and art. Now is the time to bring awareness to the public so we do not forget what is happening in our own backyard and begin to help pick up the pieces that have been left behind.
Zodiac Productions, an independent film company based in Austin, Texas, is working on a documentary about the effects Hurricane Katrina had on the city of New Orleans and the New Orleans Jazz Festival. On November 4th the filmmakers are holding a music festival to raise funds towards the production of their project. This event will take place at The Oaks and will feature New Orleans and Austin musicians.
Filming for the documentary began during the 2004 Jazz Festival and will finish up with this year’s 2006 Jazz Festival. During this year’s Jazzfest such national artists as Galactic, Gov’t Mule, Robert Randolph, Particle, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and The Greyboy Allstars were filmed. Some of these artists shared their vision on the future of New Orleans and its deeply rooted music culture. The focus of this documentary is to capture the vibe and spirit of this innovative festival by way of its social and musical interaction between festival attendees, performers, and residents of the city of New Orleans. Showing that despite the tragic murder of local New Orleans artist Daniel Breaux in 2004 and last year’s Hurricane Katrina, the power of music and people’s spirit can overcome any disaster. The various musical performances, interviews with locals effected by Katrina, and awareness of the organization Habitat for Humanity will demonstrate the films focus of music and social interaction to overcome such disasters in the future. Proceeds of any sales from the final film will go to the New Orleans Habitat for Humanity Chapter for Katrina assistance.
