The honor was all mine in catching Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears at Austin’s Art Alliance’s big charity event “Art After Dark.” Playing on the 1st Street Bridge the set up was amazing and windy with weather threatening, but it was pulled off seamlessly. The pure garage soul that brings such a strong element funk and rock  makes this band so damn fun to listen and dance to. Black Joe Lewis was on his game, getting the crowd on their feet, playing some covers, some hits off their newly released album, which, by the way, has hit the #2 spot in most sold Texas Artists at Waterloo Records. They are about to embark on a bit of an east coast/central Texas tour. These guys bring a sound that’s so unique and powerful that it’s refreshing to watch, much less listen to on CD. With a horn section, percussion, rhythm guitar and front man, Lewis bringing a James Brown/Sam Cooke influence into the mix they have found their footing and the record has taken off with rave reviews in national and local mags. Catch them live if you want to be wowed, but vinyl or MP3 will knock your socks off just as effectively. They’ll be around at ACL (just another reason to get that wristband) and will certainly play in Austin between. Catch ’em if you can before they get too big for you to handle. If there’s an album worth buying this year… this would be it.
