imageOur leader Russ and I wheeled into a crowded and sweaty Belmont to see two of my favorite dance/funk bands. T-Bird (AKA Tim Crane) and the Breaks had just started their set and I parked Russ in front of the three lovely chica back up singers with a multi-colored swirl of  fake fog leaking out over the stage.  T Bird has reverted to his band’s original format…horn section to his right and three smoking hot girls on his left. Russ was grinning like a madman at the girls and music while I hopped around trying to take a few photos. I have been following this band since 2008, and his original back ups were Jazz Mills, Sasha Ortiz, and Stephanie Hunt..image.three of the most beautiful girls in Austin Music! The new ones are also very sultry and slinky but I have never met themimage.  Only trombone player Matthew Price is1185226_10151700972149160_195145742_n back from the original horn section and the lumpy but lovable Andy “The Panda” McCormick is on Sax. Fun fact…Andy is a chef at Whole foods! The original drummer “Smiling” Sammy P moved to guitar and the drummer who replaced him was good but was sporting either a bad haircut or a lame toupee’…John “The Chicken” Branch seems to have replaced long time guitarist Johnny Allison. Tom Cruise look-alike Cody Furr holds down the Bass. Near the end of the set Russ told me to make sure I get a photo of  Rebirh from the upstairs area.  For those of you who haven’t been to the Belmont, it has an outdoor stage and a patio above the restaurant next door. During halftime I made my way upstairs to get a better view. Oimagence Rebirth started the crowd surged forward and the funky music started. I tried to rejoin Russ but the tightly packed crowd made that impossible…so…back upstairs I went. I could see below that some beautiful girl in a red dress and that “50’s look” latched onto to him and was fanning him! He was fine so I repaired to the deck and spent my time chatting with aging cougars and drinking ice water. The music was distorted by the surrounding downtown buildings and further hindered by the people who blab loudly about their cellphone plans and local gossip. I always wonder about people who go to live music and don’t pay attention to the band. On the plus side…it was much cooler and fun to people watch. After the show I trudged downstairs and got to meet Russ’s lovely new friend, Franny…after the show we went to the food trailers next to the old Antone’s and demolished two great home style cheeseburgers. Another night of live Austin music…Ken Miller
