wpwp1In the twenty years of hearing about how great Widespread Panic was as a jam band, I had never seen them in person mainly because they were always sold out. Russ scored us tickets and we wheeled in. No seats on the ground floor…it was standing room only. Once the music fired up I saw why people love them so much…The songs were delivered in a rapid fire sequence much like wp2Willie Nelson does his shows…no talking…just one cool song after another…The sound couldn’t have been any better…loud but Chrystal clear and sweet…The light show was awesome and perfectly synced with the music…they were consummate pros and they cranked out songs for 45 minutes before taking a quick on stage break to take a drink and then back at it until intermission. The crowd was even standing in the balconies. The men in the crowd were a post-collegiate group that appeared to be insanely happy and danced like fiends with their arms waving wp3in the air…it looked like someone was administering random electric shocks to them as they pulsated around like madmen. The women were uniformly cute in an “alterna-chick” way and had a kinda Gypsy vibe to them….they were much better dancers than the guys but you couldn’t help but love the enthusiasm displayed. One of the ushers in our section…a large woman of color… mentioned that she had never been around a wilder crowd in the year that she worked there! Overall, I loved the show…these musicians deserve the following they enjoy…I get it…make an effort to go to one of their shows. Another night of live music in Austin. Ken Miller
